Voice can be understood both literally and metaphorically. Estonian history has gone through very different periods. There have been times when people could freely express their opinions, but also times when every wrongly spoken word could lead to frightening consequences. During Museum Night, visitors can explore life in the museum buildings both in periods when education strengthened the voice of the peasantry and in times when the voice of the people was violently suppressed.
At Kuie School, you can see how education took place in the early 20th century. Throughout history, education has given people the courage and opportunity to speak up on societal issues.
Sepa Farm (1952) tells the story of the harshest period of the Soviet era, when every word had to be carefully weighed. People often had to live with two faces: one for the public and one for their family.
In the Kolkhoz Apartment Building (1967–1978), people live under foreign rule but have adapted to it. Material well-being has improved, but what about the ability to express oneself freely? And how is it today? What opportunities do people now have to participate in society and make their voices heard?
In the kolkhoz building, we discuss how a museum can engage the community and speak out more boldly and widely. We talk about the Estonian Open Air Museum’s volunteers, who contribute to public events driven by their inner voice. We also introduce our activities in Estonian culture clubs, which help people of other nationalities gain a stronger voice in society through improved language skills.
At Kolu Inn, the mixed choir of the Estonian Open Air Museum will raise their voices at 7:00 PM, conducted by Erki Meister. Throughout our history, songs have often been a powerful way to express thoughts and emotions!
Also open are Lau Village Shop, the cozy buffet in the kolkhoz apartment building(payment in cash), and the island summer café by the sea at the Hiiumaa drift fishing house.
