Seto and Peipus-Russian Christmas

Majority of the Slavs and Orthodox Setos celebrate Christmas according to the Old Calendar on January 6 and 7. The whole period of Christmas time – svjatki – lasts until January 19, the christening day. During this time people don´t work but overjoy for the birth of the Christ and go announcing the important occasion to their neighbours.
For the second time we celebrate Seto and Russian Christmas at the Estonian Open Air Museum in addition to the Estonian Christmas.
Festive day rye bread and vatrushkas are baked, chicory coffee is boiling on the oven.
It is believed that future can be seen during Christmas time and so we are foretelling future at the back room of Peipus-Russian dwelling.
Setomaa Christmas dishes are cooked. Children can make rag dolls.

14:00 – 16:00 Concert of songs and dances introducing the winter solstice customs.

Kolu Inn offers hot soup and other delicacies.
Everybody can participate at traditional folk games.
Tasting tea boiled in a samovar.
Skiing and sledding if the weather is appropriate.
The rear gate is opened in addition to the main gate (about 1 km from the main gate, in the direction of Kakumäe). Bus nr 21 from the city centre stops in front of the museum’s main gate (stop Rocca al Mare) or in front of the rear gate (stop Õismäe raba).
