The open air museum does not sleep during the winter season. It lives in a slightly more peaceful rhythm, but is surely not dull. It is a good place to enjoy fresh air in the middle of a historic village. You can also use an opportunity for which there is often no time in summer: to take a seat in one of the farms and talk with the mistress of the house about the life of the old days.

In winter season the museum park is open as well as the following buildings: Härjapea and Sepa farms, Kuie School, Kolu Inn, Lau Shop and handicraft shop.

Once a month the housewives of Härjapea farm make bread. At 3 o’clock on Friday afternoon we set the leaven to ferment and have the dough ready for the first rise. On Saturday morning we are kneading the dough, which is truly gruelling and time-consuming. We then leave the dough to rise again behind the stove, heat up the stove and put the bread in to bake. To make the bread especially tasty and soft, we’ll cover it with a fur coat afterwards. On Sunday fresh rye bread can be tasted!

On food Sundays the housewives of Härjapea farm give tips on how to make delicious dishes. Good old or fascinating new preserves, roasts, baked goods and desserts will be made right in front of your eyes.

On handricraft Saturdays the housewives of Härjapea farm introduce different knitwears from the 1920-1930s.

On Saturdays and Sundays the saleslady of Lau village shop will be glad to have visitors over on her weekend radio hours to listen to modern music or the news of the day together on her brand new radio. At the seamstress’ room skilled craft mistress Taimi Puus will teach different embroidery techniques.

On calligraphy days in Kuie school the school-mistress is showing how to write neatly with a quill and ink.

On Sepa farm you can participate in the winter activities of a farm household and get some tips on how to prepare for Estonian folk calendar holidays.
